Bp Cuff Too Small

bp cuff too small
What is proper procedure for taking BP reading in the forearm?

I had a nurse who was too lazy to go get the adult-large cuff when I insisted the one she was using was too small for my arm. So she said she would just take it in my forearm.

She put the cuff around the my forearm and inflated, but then put the stethoscope in the crook of my elbow. This didn’t make a lot of sense to me, thinking the cuff had to be between the heart and the stethoscope and she should have been listening for a pulse in the wrist.

Well – she said “yes, you can do it that way” but then stopped the procedure and took me into another room that had an adult-large cuff in it and we used that.

So for next time – where does the stethoscope go when taking BP in the forearm?

Please site a web reference so I can print it out and take it with me on my next visit. Thank you very much.

It appears it was being done incorrectly. You can get a systolic reading from placing the cuff around the forearm and feeling when the radial pulse come in.
In your example there is no reason for using the stethoscope.

In a nutshell….the correct size cuff should be used and the stethoscope place over the brachial artery at the elbow.

Good luck
